Palestinians have been longing for independence and sovereignty since
the fall of the Ottoman Empire in World War I. In 1917, the British colonial
power at the time of capture historic Palestine, where the Jewish state is
merely a dream in the minds of the Jews "around the world and the Ottoman
Empire was drawing to an end, the factors that make the Palestinians hope they
will finally have their own sovereignty over their own land.
However, in the midst of
such great expectations by the Palestinians, the British promised the Jews,
free of charge, 'Jewish national homeland in the land of others, bringing
Jewish immigrants also hope to practice some kind of sovereignty. Both the Jews
in Palestine and the Palestinians began to combine their dreams with action on
the ground; Palestine has been through several stops in their struggle against
British colonial rule, such as the revolution in 1936, which was followed by
some suggestions that are trying to make Jews share the indigenous Palestinian
sovereignty over the land of Palestine.
Palestinians in their turn
against all plans, given their unequivocal right to the land of Palestine,
until the 1947 United Nations partition plan, which provided 56% of Palestinian
land to Israel and Arab Jerusalem city turned to the international market. Although
the partition plan, which was approved by the international community and rejected
by the Arabs, including Palestinians, have allowed the Palestinians to adopt a
partial sovereignty over lands newly divided them. Palestinians later
determined to fight again for their sovereignty, war broke out in 1948
following the departure of the British army, but because of many factors,
particularly the Arab armies weak and organized militia many Israeli Jews,
Palestinians have failed once again to see their dream (sovereignty) will come
into reality.
On June 5, 1967, Israel
launched a major war against the Palestinians, Jordan, Egypt, Syria and end the
occupation of the remaining part of Palestine, and extended the boundaries of
the state of Israel 'spiked' into the Syrian Golan Heights, the Jordan Valley
and the Sinai Peninsula of Egypt. Thus, the Palestinians have lost hope for
sovereignty over the land of their country, because Israel imposed a strict
military rule and begin to build more illegal Israeli settlements on
Palestinian-owned land in different parts of the occupied Palestinian territories.
However, the Palestinians never gave up;
they continue to struggle on the road to independence and sovereignty,
especially popular uprising (Intifada) in 1987, which forced the late Prime
Minister of Israel, Yitzhak Rabin, to recognize the right of Palestinians to
sovereignty by signing the Oslo peace agreement with the Palestinian Liberation
organization's chairman, the late Yasser Arafat in 1993, which helped create
the first sign of sovereignty in the land of Palestine.
Since the creation of the
Palestinian National Authority (PNA) in 1994, up to now, the Israeli government
has not allowed Palestinians to practice their sovereignty freely and widely,
especially during the 2000 Camp David peace talks between PNA President Yasser
Arafat and then Israeli Prime Minister Yehud Barak. These negotiations failed
only when it comes to the occupied Palestinian sovereignty over East Jerusalem
and the return of Palestinian refugees. 2000 Camp David talks failed to bring
the second Intifada in September of that year; something handed rules of the
game, such as the Palestinians, as Israel stubbornly policies during the Oslo
period, had to fight again to sovereignty.
In September 2005, Israel
has left the physical part of the occupied Palestinian territories (Gaza),
however, insist they do not give the Palestinians their legitimate right to
sovereignty over their national lands, by maintaining control over the Gaza
border crossings, routes sea and air space, and also by not reaching an
agreement with the PNA on the movement of Palestinian people and goods. In
addition, the new Israeli government, has declared it will return back to the
situation before 1967 (withdrawal from the West Bank), under the obsession of
security, which has created a sea of blood over the past four decades.
